Save the planet: Have an abortion!

I ran across this story and it has left a bitter taste in my mouth.  Great Britain’s senior advisor to the government on the environment is now advocating abortion and limiting family size to combat global warming:

Couples who have more than two children are being “irresponsible” by creating an unbearable burden on the environment, the government’s green adviser has warned.

Jonathon Porritt, who chairs the government’s Sustainable Development Commission, says curbing population growth through contraception and abortion must be at the heart of policies to fight global warming. He says political leaders and green campaigners should stop dodging the issue of environmental harm caused by an expanding population.

A report by the commission, to be published next month, will say that governments must reduce population growth through better family planning.

“I am unapologetic about asking people to connect up their own responsibility for their total environmental footprint and how they decide to procreate and how many children they think are appropriate,” Porritt said.

“I think we will work our way towards a position that says that having more than two children is irresponsible. It is the ghost at the table. We have all these big issues that everybody is looking at and then you don’t really hear anyone say the “p” word.”

I find this disturbing to my sensibilities on so many levels:  As a Catholic, as a mother, as a small-government conservative with strong libertarian tendencies, as a person possessing a brain.

Keep in mind that the US—at this very moment—is treading in the tracks of the UK, especially with the election of liberal Barack Obama and the Democrat majorities in the House and Senate.  Nancy Pelosi, with her statements advocating hundreds of millions of tax dollars to go toward contraception and the suppliers of contraception (and the suppliers of abortions, too, i.e., Planned Parenthood) is emblematic of the radical mindset that permeates the left.  If Pelosi and this Jonathon Porritt do not exemplify the dangers of taking the dubious dangers of climate change to its extreme, I don’t know who does.

Is Great Britain on the brink of implementing government-mandated population control policies—including forced sterilizations, abortions, and one-child only policies—similar to China’s?  I pray not.  We need to be aware of this sinister mindset, and work to combat it here on our own soil.

  1. If we are eventually limited to the “one and a spare” concept of planning our families, I would like to know just who do these talking heads think is going to pay taxes….consume products…invent new products and keep this “big wheel” of a world running? I remember we went through the same “global warming..climate change…limit your family…save the earth…solar power..end of civilization as we know it” push in the 70’s. Since then we have also heard the same “experts” say that the birth rates are low in some countries that they have a shortage of new workers and tax-payers. Now just which way is it?

The government is already way too involved in our lives. They seem to mess up most things they control. Why would we even think of listening to them about our reproductive choices?

  2. I applaud the efforts of Greenies to reduce the carbon dioxide in our world. However, they could do so much more to reduce CO2 by simply refusing to exhale. I think that that would add tremendously to the efforts to save the earth and improve the quality of life in general.

  4. Amen, Trish. People are potential problem solvers, not raving resource-consuming burdens. Has anyone seen “Demographic Winter”? Any one who’s watched “An Inconvenient Truth” should watch DW.
